Actions for Health


Consider the following situation. Respond to the questions that follow.

Situation A: You have a six-year-old sister. You observe that she always has colds and sore throat.
1.       What do you think of your sister’s condition?

She has the common cough and colds. I think it should be treated because if it is prolonged it may cause pneumonia, influenza, laryngitis, bronchitis, asthma, and petussis.

2.       What would you do to help her?

I would let her drink lots and lots of Calamansi juice, have her rest, and also urge her to drink lots of fluids.

3.       What are the reasons for the actions you take?

The actions I take are based on what usually helps when someone has a cold.

Situation B: You have colds. You cough; have a stuffy or running nose, sore throat, and slight fever.
1.       What would you do with your cold?

I would try to treat it immediately by drinking lots of fluids and taking long naps.

2.       How can you prevent spreading your colds to the other members of the family and o your classmates?

I would make sure to keep washing my hands and keep a tissue and a handkerchief nearby especially during that times that I need it.

3.       What can do to relieve your cough, stuffy, or running nose, sore throat, and fever?

I would rink fruit juices as well and refrain from drinking cold water. Having plenty of rest would also help relieve the symptoms fast.

4.       What are the reasons for the action you take?

The main reason for the actions I take is that because I am certain that the procedures I follow would swiftly relieve me of my cold, runny nose, sore, throat, and/or fever.

Situation C: The DOH launched the campaign called Immunization Against Measles or “Ligtas Tigdas.” The target groups are the infants and the school children. The health team goes from house to house to give immunization to the target groups.
1.       What can you say about this campaign?

I think it is a very useful and helpful campaign that has realistic standards, especially regarding the fact that it focuses on school children and infants.

2.       What can you do for this campaign?

I think in order to support it I must inform more people about this campaign so that they will be more aware of the benefits they can get from it.

3.       Give the reasons for the actions you take.

The reasons for these actions revolve around my capabilities and what I think I can do in my own way.

4.       What do you think is your role in the prevention of communicable diseases?

I can prevent the spreading of communicable diseases by practicing proper hygiene and by teaching this practice to young ones as well.

Situation D: Your mother has high blood pressure. She complains of headache and pain at the back at the back of the head, dizziness, and redness of face.
1.       How would you help your mother get relief from high blood pressure?

I would arrange my mom’s diet  and make sure she would a avoid fatty and salty food, alcoholic beverages, and food with too much oil. I would also encourage her to exercise more and I would accompany her to a regular check-up to a physician.

2.       What are the reasons for the actions you take?

I have taken these actions because I know they are suitable to the situation.

Situation E: You have a neighbor who has been complaining of irregular bowel movement, anemia, lump in the breast, tightening of the right breast, and loss of weight.
1.       What would you do to help her?

I would immediately take her to the doctor.

2.       How can you help in the prevention of cancer?

I can help prevent cancer by helping people detect it before it’s at its worse state.

3.       Give reasons for the actions you take.

I took the following actions because I know it’s one of the only ways to actually help people who are detecting cancer in their body.

Situation F: On uncle of yours is complaining of frequent urinating, feeling weak, excessive thirst, loss of weight, and low resistance against infection.
1.       What do you think is his illness?

I think he has diabetes.

2.       What can you do to help him?

I can help him by enforcing a health balance diet with food that are low in carbohydrates yet high in protein.  I would also help and remind him to get a daily urine examination and check-up with the doctor.

3.       What are the reasons for the actions you take?

I took these actions because I think all of these are necessary in order to help my uncle.
