How To Deal When People Around You Offer You Illegal Drugs

Where are the most usual places people find, buy, share, or offer drugs?

List them down.

Drugs can be found in places where people who use them live or stay. Drugs can be found in parties, in the streets, in night clubs, in school, in the neighborhood and sometimes even at home.

People who have tried and are dependent on drugs find it hard to refuse when they are offered more drugs. It would be easy to tell you that when people offer you drugs you just say no. But it isn’t that easy to say no. It’s not easy to say no to drugs when you are already addicted to drugs. It also isn’t easy to say no when the people who offer these to you are in your school, in your community, and even in your house. It’s not easy. But that’s life, the right thing isn’t always easy to do.

It won’t be easy, but it still is possible.

So how do you start avoiding drugs or how do you start saying no to drugs? Here are a few options:

 

Option 1: Make sure to also be around people who are emotionally and physically healthy.

In other words: surround yourself with good people who don’t use drugs.

It’s been stated and studied that you are the average person of the five people you spend time with. Meaning if you hang out with people who are drug users or if you are around friends who use drugs, you will most likely be a drug user as well. If not now, eventually.

Do not get me wrong, you don’t have to judge them or rebuke them for using drugs. You don’t have to discriminate them. Sure, you can accept them, but you don’t have to be like them. You can accept what they do, but you don’t have to adjust to them. Just because some of your friends are using drugs doesn’t mean you should use drugs as well. If they force you to do something you don’t want to do, then those aren’t real friends.

Surround yourself with people who influence your life in a positive and good way.

Option 2: Read up.

Know what illegal drugs are and what harmful effects they cause. Know what you’re up against. Because the last thing you should do is underestimate what it is and what it does to the people who use them.

Know that the abuse of hard drugs or narcotics could lead to death due to infection and overdose. Familiarize yourself with the physical and mental illnesses that are associated with drug abuse. Look at before and after pictures of super stars, actors, rock stars, celebrities, and other people who got addicted to drugs. Realize what drug abuse does to a person’s body.

The more informed you are the better. This way when you’re tempted or when you’re offered these drugs you start to ask yourself, “is it worth it?”

 

Option 3: (If you find it hard to decline drug offers) Think about what other things in life you can achieve.

Start making goals for yourself. Keep yourself occupied. And start thinking about your future more. You have to sacrifice what you want to achieve what you want to become.

There are more fulfilling activities other than drugs. Maybe investing in a career, or practicing an instrument. Drugs can destroy family ties, so spend time strengthening bonds with your family and friends.

 

Option 4: Prepare yourself for occasions where strangers may offer drugs to you.

If you know or if you’re aware of the times/places where/where people will be there to sell/give/offer you drugs, be prepared. Prepare an excuse. Or just say no. Be calm and firm.

Be calm but firm. Say no, loud and clear.

 

Option 5: Have a mentor

If you’re one of those people who has been exposed to drugs for so long that even when you try to fight the urge, you find it extremely hard to stop taking them... find a mentor.

Look for someone who’s been through the same situation and ask them for help. Ask for their support and their advice. Let them remind you that although it’s hard, it’s not impossible.

 

Option 6: If a situation is bad... call the police secretly. Or tell an adult.

Drug dealers are usually drug users. They can be dangerous. If they are dangerous, and they insist on following you even after you declined their offer, go to a crowded area, tell an adult or call the police. Drug users can be very violent at times, so be alert and be careful.

 

Option 7: Walk away or change the topic

When a friend offers you drugs, either just walk away or change the topic. Or make an excuse.  Do whatever you can to say no.

 

Option 8: Ask for help

You can’t do everything alone. If you find it hard to go against peer pressure, ask for help. Again, find a friend or friends who are on the same side as you. Surround yourself with people who have the same values as you.

1.       Differentiate tolerance from withdrawal syndrome.

Tolerance in drugs means a person taking larger and larger doses every time to secure the desired effects of the drug. This is because the first amounts have quickly been recognized by the body as too small. Tolerance is the need to take more and more, increasing the amount each time.

Withdrawal syndrome is a hard violent feeling when one does not receive enough dosage of the drug within 6-24 hours. Hallucinations, stomach pains, vomiting and convulsions may be experienced. The intensity of the withdrawal varies with the amount of drug used and the duration of drug dependence. In extreme cases, death will occur.

2.       Why are narcotics prohibited?

Narcotics are called hard drugs. They are drugs which relieve pain and produce profound sleep.  However, the improper usage of narcotics is very dangerous, for it needs guidance of a doctor. A slight mistake in the use of narcotics could lead to tolerance and eventually dependence on prohibited drugs. The careless use of narcotics could lead to drowsiness, change in mood, mental clouding, lethargy, unconsciousness, and eventually death.

3.       How can the use of narcotics be avoided?

The use of narcotics could be avoided by being informed, aware, and understanding what they are and what their effects are. Usually, drugs nowadays are at parties, smuggled in streets, and even in schools.

It can be avoided because it can be refused. It all depends on the choice of a person and his/her knowledge about the bad effects that comes after using it.

4.       Give your reaction on the question, “What will you do when you are offered narcotics?”

I’ll refuse. Simple as that. No one and  I mean no one can and will be able to make me do something I do not want to do. I don’t give in to peer pressure especially if I know what I’m doing is right.

5.       Why are the family, school, and community important agencies in preventing/controlling prohibited drugs?

Proper  guidance of the youth is very important. Proper guidance includes the dissemination of information about drug abuse, the monitored exchanges, the values, and the provision of love.

The family, the school, and the community are three of the most important influencers when it comes to drug abuse. When teenagers receive little love or happiness from family members or friends from school, they tend to love for those things somewhere else. Sometimes, they look for it in drugs. These said agencies have a huge impact in teaching how teenagers should react and how they should live.

6.       Name five ways how a student can help in controlling prohibited drugs.

1. Stay away from them.
2. Know what they are and what they do to people. Know that staying away from them is the right thing to do.
3. Do not hang out with people who take prohibited drugs.
4. Refuse them when offered to you.
5. Report to authorities those who are selling/taking drugs.

7.       Who should make decisions when there is a problem in life? Why?

People should make the decisions when there are problems in life. They should make the decision to face the problem and work their way towards a solution. Problems do not disappear, they will always be there. But, every second of every day is a chance to change, a chance to learn from failure, and a chance to try again.

You do not escape from reality because even if you try to, it will always come crashing back to your face. The only solution is, facing the problem head on.

8.       What are the things that lie behind good decision making?

Good decision making would mean good outcomes, good relationships, and a good future.

10.   Explain this statement: “A normal person does not need prohibited drugs.”

We can live without prohibited drugs. We can live without them by ourselves. We as human beings do not need to depend on something that can kill us.

Polyphonic Music -- Secular vs. Sacred Music

Renaissance, French for “rebirth,” perfectly describes the intellectual and economic changes that occurred in Europe from the fourteenth through the sixteenth centuries.

The Renaissance period in Western European culture is generally recognized as spanning the years between 1430 and 1600.  The sacred music composed during this period was for the Roman Catholic Church. Some instruments may have been employed, but the music was written primarily for acapella choir.

An important development of development of the period was the choir, which performed polyphonic music. Polyphony is a texture consisting of two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody. As opposed to the species terminology of counterpoint, polyphony was generally either "pitch-against-pitch" / "point-against-point" or "sustained-pitch" in one part with melismas of varying lengths in another.

Polyphonic music is built up by superimposed melodies that are independent but harmonized.

Polyphonic music stood as the main structure of choirs during the Renaissance Period.

 

 Secular and Sacred Music


The Mass

The Mass is a performance of the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, based on the words of Christ at the Last Supper.

From very early times, the Mass has been set to music, and some of the greatest music of th  world has been composed for the Mass.

One of the most famous composers of the period was Giovanni Pierluigi de Palestrina (1525-1594), the greatest master of Roman Catholic Church music. Palestrina was the name of the small town near Rome where he was born. He began his musical training when he was seven, starting out as a choir boy. He used that small echo of voices to create his own style. In Palestrina’s works you’d always observe the smooth hums and harmonizing of human voices, wrapping around the atmosphere. It’s almost as if you feel the very presence of God in the music.

 

Motet

The motet is a religious which appeared first in the twelfth century when the cathedral church tended to supplant the monastery church and more elaborate music was needed. During the Renaissance, it had the most elaborate polyphonic treatment. It was not accompanied by any music instrument. In this form, each voice sings a variation of the first phrase of the original melody of the text. The simultaneous singing of the four voices creates a sonorous texture and rhythm.

 

 

Secular Music

The secular music of the Renaissance period consists of three voices which sang melody and two voices which sang harmony.

It’s basically music where composers get to express themselves however they want. It is different from Sacred music because this kind of music isn’t used for the Mass. Instead, it’s used to entertain, to express, and to feel.
